Rodeo Day Fun
The Cloverdale Rodeo has nothing on BCA Rodeo Day! We had Cowboys, Lassos, and Bandanas galore!! Our class looked great and had 100% Participation--Rewards coming soon!!
Not sure if these boys are represent the strong arm of the law or a band of outlaws.....(Maybe a little of both!)
Or maybe they are just having fun!

Casual Day Color Teams
For Casual Day this time, the students chose colors to represent their teams. They dressed up in the color, made signs, decorated, made hair bands, etc. It was a great day for team spirit!
Here you see the Scorpions in black. According to them, Black is dangerous and goes with everything!
The Spring Flings chose pink. They covered their desks with pink, made name tags, constructed pink paper origami bows, etc. Good times.
The 3 Peas in a Pod chose the "non-color" white. They also had signs and creatively made tissue hair flowers.
Go Team Blue. When we took into consideration clothing and team spirit, this team came out on top--First place to the Mighty Monkeys! They even had crepe paper streamers, blue duct tape, and as you can see, they also had some pretty fearful false mustaches and paper folded hats. Don't ask me how they managed to keep up with all this and their school work!
Good job to all the teams! What a fun day!

Spring Break!
Term 2 is over. Report Cards are finished. Tests are taken. Books are finished. Science Fair is over.....We decided to have a party to usher in our spring break! Some of our wonderful moms took charge of this party, and we had some super games.
How many noodles can you collect on....another noodle? :0) Game was won by Gabe! Nicely done.
Joseph was very patient and steady.
Then, we went onto the next game. Each student put an Oreo cookie on their forehead and tried to get it in their mouth using only their face muscles. What a riot!
Bethany has almost GOT IT! But Gabe won this round, too!
Jack really gets into the action, but he is beaten to the Oreo by Emily at the last minute!
Charity claimed the tasty prize in this round.
And this game would not be complete without some hilarious video footage!!

The next game was to move M&Ms by sucking on a straw. They had to construct a smiley face. This game left me dizzy!
Here Anais is doing a great job!
The last game was to stack Fruit Loops on a popsicle stick and hold them steady till the minute was up. Believe us when we say it is harder than it looks!!
Joey thinks he has the hang of it here.
And lastly, the adults couldn't stand just watching the fun!
I hope this is never used against me! I think I still have Oreo cookie crumbs in my eye, but....what fun!
I hope everyone has a GREAT Spring Break! See you in two weeks!

Book Gala--Publishing Party
Our Published Books Have Arrived!!! We kept it a secret until Friday afternoon and presented the books to the students at the end of the day. Everyone was super thrilled!! How exciting to see your work in a hard-bound book!! One student said, "When I got my hard-cover book in my hands, it felt magical! When we held our books, we were all very proud of ourselves. I think some of us were on the verge of crying we were all so happy! It was one of my greatest experiences of being proud of myself!"
As you can see, everyone was waiting in eager anticipation!!

It was hard to wait, but we left the books at school and on Monday we set up the band room for our first ever Book Gala. Each student got to display their own book and show all the parents, family, and friend that were able to come.

He read his book Bumble the Bee to the younger members of the audience after which he dismissed all the students and the program was over! Each student got to take their books home! What an exciting learning experience and treasured keepsake for each one.

Field Trip to Gulf of Georgia Cannery
In Socials, we have been studying the Salmon Industry and its effect on British Columbia and our region. We have studied salmon life cycles and the phenomenon of the salmon returning to their very tributary to lay their eggs. We have also studied the cannery workers and the process of preserving the fish. Today, the trip to the cannery was a perfect wrap-up to our unit. It was a great day--a lot of learning, demonstrations, and fun activities. 
What a great looking group!
As you can see it was a little cold and wet, but it didn't diminish our excitement for the day!
Before we went in, we got to know the statues outside the Cannery. Here Sharon and Joseph are with their new....friend!

Once inside, (where it was very cold) we learned that the fishermen were among the best paid workers for the cannery. However, the work was very dangerous and they would be out to sea in little dories for up to 10 days at a time!
As we listened to the information about the fishermen, we could look out and see the modern day trawlers in the harbor.
Our guide uses a fabric fish to talk about what has to happen to the fish before it can be put in cans--fins, head, tail, guts all gone...The men who prepared the fish this way were fast! Very fast! They could gut and clean a fish completely in 20 seconds! They also went through several knives a day, taking them home every night to re-sharpen.
Joey got to "take out" the guts! YUCK!!
Here we are at the scaling station where the fish's scales were removed.
Joey thought he would have been an expert at this station of the cannery. Unfortunately pay is not good and the work is cold, wet, and messy. Chinese women often did this job and would actually bring their children to work!
Here the fish are cut just the right size for the cans by the "Gang Knife" machine. It was very dangerous and many got hair and even fingers caught in this machine.
Now the salmon has been put in the cans and is ready to be sealed.
This salmon has been canned and sealed. It is now ready to be labeled.
We participated in a "History Mystery" and had to use artifacts and clues to figure out the identity and background of a cannery worker. This group appears to be getting help from Brother Jules.
This team's "worker" was a native worker who came in to work in the cannery just in the summer months and then returned to her family.
This group identified their "worker" as a rich cannery owner!
This group was not treated well at the cannery store which was a clue as to the identity of their character.
Michael thought he would make a great Cannery Mechanic. The Cannery Mechanic was the second highest paid job in the cannery!
Due to the rain, we had to come back a little earlier than planned; but it was a great day, and everyone learned a lot! A special shout-out to our drivers--thank you so much for making the trip possible!
