Richmond Art Gallery Field Trip
Yesterday our class got to go to the Richmond Art Gallery for a Field Trip! First, we got to spend some time viewing the artwork in the Gallery--Roots and Elders by Evan Lee. This show included scannings (like photos) of ginseng (meaning human roots), pencil drawings of older women in Richmond, and a continuous photo stream of construction work in Richmond.
Here we are learning about the gallery works and the idea of a still life.
After finishing in the Gallery, we went into the studio area. Here we donned our aprons and with a little instruction, started sketching fruit.
This process seemed so promising that even our volunteer drivers decided to try their hand at some drawings.

This is Faith's sketch. What a beautiful example of what we were instructed to do.
After finishing our sketch, we transferred it onto canvas, and our teacher showed us about mixing colors. We also learned about tints and shades. By looking at the fruit on our table, we saw how light and shadow makes the fruit look round and 3-D. Armed with all this new information, we started to paint. We each had a pallet of Acrylic paints and a few paintbrushes. Here is Miss Leonard hard at work shading grapes.

After leaving the Art Gallery we walked to Minoru Park, where we spent the afternoon. Here we had the whole end of the park to ourselves. We ate a picnic lunch and played games.
This game of elimination got serious! I'm glad we had some good and impartial judges! <wink>
And then there was the drama of trying to get a group picture......
Tory, you are looking particularly lovely.....picture ruined....
Ava, seriously?......picture no good.
And then it got really out of hand.....I never did get a good group picture....Oh, well, I guess craziness is a good representation of us....
We had a wonderful day and are so thankful for the good weather and the super time we had. A special thank you to our volunteer drivers and all the parents for getting your students to school early.
As to the finished artwork, it will be on display at the BCA Evening of the Arts in June. We hope you can all make it to the even to view our masterpieces.

Rodeo Day Fun
The Cloverdale Rodeo has nothing on BCA Rodeo Day! We had Cowboys, Lassos, and Bandanas galore!! Our class looked great and had 100% Participation--Rewards coming soon!!
Not sure if these boys are represent the strong arm of the law or a band of outlaws.....(Maybe a little of both!)
Or maybe they are just having fun!

Casual Day Color Teams
For Casual Day this time, the students chose colors to represent their teams. They dressed up in the color, made signs, decorated, made hair bands, etc. It was a great day for team spirit!
Here you see the Scorpions in black. According to them, Black is dangerous and goes with everything!
The Spring Flings chose pink. They covered their desks with pink, made name tags, constructed pink paper origami bows, etc. Good times.
The 3 Peas in a Pod chose the "non-color" white. They also had signs and creatively made tissue hair flowers.
Go Team Blue. When we took into consideration clothing and team spirit, this team came out on top--First place to the Mighty Monkeys! They even had crepe paper streamers, blue duct tape, and as you can see, they also had some pretty fearful false mustaches and paper folded hats. Don't ask me how they managed to keep up with all this and their school work!
Good job to all the teams! What a fun day!

Spring Break!
Term 2 is over. Report Cards are finished. Tests are taken. Books are finished. Science Fair is over.....We decided to have a party to usher in our spring break! Some of our wonderful moms took charge of this party, and we had some super games.
How many noodles can you collect on....another noodle? :0) Game was won by Gabe! Nicely done.
Joseph was very patient and steady.
Then, we went onto the next game. Each student put an Oreo cookie on their forehead and tried to get it in their mouth using only their face muscles. What a riot!
Bethany has almost GOT IT! But Gabe won this round, too!
Jack really gets into the action, but he is beaten to the Oreo by Emily at the last minute!
Charity claimed the tasty prize in this round.
And this game would not be complete without some hilarious video footage!!

The next game was to move M&Ms by sucking on a straw. They had to construct a smiley face. This game left me dizzy!
Here Anais is doing a great job!
The last game was to stack Fruit Loops on a popsicle stick and hold them steady till the minute was up. Believe us when we say it is harder than it looks!!
Joey thinks he has the hang of it here.
And lastly, the adults couldn't stand just watching the fun!
I hope this is never used against me! I think I still have Oreo cookie crumbs in my eye, but....what fun!
I hope everyone has a GREAT Spring Break! See you in two weeks!

Book Gala--Publishing Party
Our Published Books Have Arrived!!! We kept it a secret until Friday afternoon and presented the books to the students at the end of the day. Everyone was super thrilled!! How exciting to see your work in a hard-bound book!! One student said, "When I got my hard-cover book in my hands, it felt magical! When we held our books, we were all very proud of ourselves. I think some of us were on the verge of crying we were all so happy! It was one of my greatest experiences of being proud of myself!"
As you can see, everyone was waiting in eager anticipation!!

It was hard to wait, but we left the books at school and on Monday we set up the band room for our first ever Book Gala. Each student got to display their own book and show all the parents, family, and friend that were able to come.

Each class selected 4 students to represent their class and present their books. Josiah went last. He read his book Bumble the Bee to the younger members of the audience after which he dismissed all the students and the program was over! Each student got to take their books home! What an exciting learning experience and treasured keepsake for each one.
