Field trip--Student Bloggers
Yesterday the whole 5/6 class went on a field trip to Britannia Mine Museum. We left at 8:40 and got there at 10:00. When we got there, we were a little bit early, so we got to look around. After a few minutes, our program started. We met a man named Michael, and he was our guide. First, we started at the museum. Then, we went to see a video. After that, we all went to put our backpacks in a place where they wouldn't get lost. Then, we went on a train into the mine.
Michael showed us how they would mine a long time ago. He showed us how big the mines actually were. When we came out of the mine, there was a huge whistle which was used for emergencies only. Michael was only allowed to blow it once to show us. Then we went through a shed that had all sorts of cool core samples. Then we went . . .
Into the mill!! Michael did a cool experiment then we all got to look around. The mill was so tall that there was 393 steps going to the top floor!! Then we went for lunch, and then we went gold panning! I got a few gems and a lot of fool's gold. I also got 4 flecks of gold! Then it was time to go home.

Yesterday, on November 26,2013 the 5/6 class drove all the way up to Britannia Mine Museum. Ava, Faith, Emily, Jack, Gabe, and I rode in Sis. Leah's van. Since the car trip would take about 1 hour and 45 minutes because of rush hour traffic, we listened to Adventures in Odyssey in the van, and we took pictures of each other and scenery.
When we got to Britannia Mine Museum, we met up with the rest of the class, and then we saw our tour guide. He was called Michael, and he told us the rules and let us go to the gift shop for a while. Then we looked at an exhibit that showed us a little bit of the rocks that they mined at the mines.
We then waked up these steps to a place where were had to hop in a train to get to the underground mines. When we got there, Michael told us ta little bit of what the miners used to mine and how they did it. He even showed us how to use the tools. They were super loud. After that, he showed us where the workers went to go to work. Michael also showed us how to get the minerals out of the rocks. We saw all the mine managers that had fun the mine.
Then we had lunch at 12:30. After lunch we gold panned. We had to take off our jackets and stick our hands in freezing cold water. A lot of us found fool's gold, gold , iron, amethysts, and quartz. Then we drove the long journey back to school. On the way back, we had got cocoa, steamed milk, and apple cider. We arrived back at 3:00.

Field Trip to Britannia Mine Museum
What a wonderful day!! Today was our first field trip of the year.
We went to Britannia Mine Museum, near Squamish, between Vancouver and Whistler. We arrived around 10 and had a few minutes to spare before our program started.
Here is Zach beside some mining cars.
For some reason, he knew a few of the boys by name before we even left this spot....
This is one of the "small" mining trucks. The museum got it because it was too little. The company was buying a "real" truck. Two of these can fit in the bed of one of the trucks they use today!! Joseph looks pretty tiny on the wheel there!
Here we are in our hard hats ready to go into the mine.
And our trusty drivers who got us there and back safely today! Thank you, ladies! They were also our camera crew today!
After riding down the tracks, we got out of our "train" and explored some of the mine. Michael demonstrated three drills for us and showed us how the miners got rid of muck. He also turned out the lights and showed us how dark it was for miners when they only had candles to guide them.
Perfect Picture op underground.
We exited the mine, and got to hear the mine bell which use to mean a change in shift for the men at work. Now, they only use the bell for demonstrations or in an emergency.
In this building we learned how to process the rock and extract the minerals. We didn't get to climb up the 400 stairs to the top floor, but we did learn that originally the men climbed it without handrails and that you CAN get the opportunity to climb it if you volunteer at the mine!
Here we are learning the process to extract the minerals.
A lovely little lady--Carrie--sporting a fur hood....we needed them today!
And finally!!!! The GOLD PANNING!!!!
We found Amethyst, Fool's Gold, Quartz, and several people found REAL GOLD FLAKES!!
Here is Gabe with a large piece of Fool's Gold.
Our persistent moms found some treasures, too!
This group started out as intrepid explorers....
Statues of Great Men.
Some toppled off their rock with relative calm....
....and some, not so quietly!
All in all, a wonderful day for lots of reflection!

Shortly after, we met our Tour Guide for the day, Michael. Everyone listened very attentively as we listened to how the day was going to go.

Student of the Month-- November
Congratulations to Faith for being our class's November Student of the Month!
Here is Faith receiving her award from Mr. Tekatch.
Faith is new to our class and BCA this year. She is a wonderful addition. I have been impressed with Faith’s Christian Character as well as her positive attitude. She is a great encourager and often is heard around the class saying uplifting and complementary things to other students. Faith has made friends quickly. In school, she tries her best at everything she does. Good Job, Faith. Keep it up!!

Spaghetti! Oh, Spaghetti
Spaghetti, Spaghetti, Spaghetti,
Long, stringy noodles
Add to boiling water, and in ten minutes it is ready.
Spaghetti, Spaghetti, Spaghetti
Juicy, slimy, and yummy
When you eat it you think of my Aunt Betty.
--Emily
Spaghetti, Spaghetti, Spaghetti
I just can't wait till dinner is ready.
Noodles, sauce, and lots of cheese
And in case of left overs, we can always freeze
--Joey
Spaghetti, Spaghetti, Spaghetti
I'll eat you when I'm ready.
You're wriggly and jiggly
And really, really squiggly.
Covered with sauce and lots of cheese
Smacking our lips we all cried more please!
--Anais
The Grade 5s had to write poems for part of their spelling assignment last week! Some students really put a lot of effort into it! Good Job, Writers!

Remembrance Day Ceremony
The Remembrance Day Assembly was today. We had presentations from each homeroom class as well as Special Recognition for Brother Hugh Message and A Special Tribute to Brother Edwin Dodd, a Top Gun Fighter Pilot in the 50s. Our class sang a song called "Thank you, Soldiers" by Michael and Angela Sounders. Good job to everyone!
I am not sure about the clicks and flashes of light and apologize it is not better quality.
Thank you to all our veterans and soldiers who have given their lives to make our countries what they are today.
