Vancouver Aquarium Field Trip #3

Our last field trip this year was to the Vancouver Aquarium.  We left the school early and started our program as soon as we arrived at the aquarium.  In groups, the students got to learn about, touch, and perform some experiments with sea urchins (Experiments with no harm to the animal, of course!). Some students tested whether the creatures preferred light or darkness.  Some found out sea urchin food preferences.  The coolest thing was touching the urchins! Pinkies only, please!
Here, Tory enjoys touching the spiny creature! Everyone expected them to be slimy, but they were not gross at all!

This group listens attentively; and below, you can see our instructor and some of the aquarium volunteers reviewing the scientific method with the students.

Jeremiah posed with a magnifying glass, looking very official!

After our classroom experience, we went on to the Wet Lab.  Here, there were four tanks, each with a different variety of creature.  As the students visited each tank with their aquarium volunteer, they got to learn about and touch creatures in each of the tanks.
All of our volunteers were very good.  They were very interesting and kept everyone very engaged in learning about the underwater animals.
After about an hour in the Wet Lab, it was time for the class to explore the aquarium! Each group could pick the parts of the aquarium to explore and what shows they wanted to see.  I think the favorites were the 4-D show (Which I loved as well!), the dolphin show, and the beluga show.  Here are Zack and Justin in the 4-D show with their awesomely cool glasses!
The Amazon display with all manner of snakes, frogs, and spiders was another favorite.  Above, Gideon checks out one of the frog displays.

The day was over all too soon, and we headed back to BCA.  Everyone had a great time and wrote the next day in their school journals that it was an awesome day and on of the highlights of our year.

A special thank you to our parent drivers and to the students who were so enthusiastic and represented our school so well.

April Student of the Month--Preston

Preston is our April Student of the Month.  This is what Mr. Tekatch read about him at the family assembly today!

"Preston is a very conscientious student.  Lately, he has been taking real ownership of his learning and taking a more active part in class.  He works very hard with his homework and to prepare for assessments and is rewarded with top marks almost every time.  Preston is very athletic and likes sports.  He is a great role model of good sportsmanship and team leadership.  Although sometimes Preston is very quiet, he has great strength of character and is a great Christian example in and out of the classroom.  Preston, Keep up the good work!

Congratulations, Preston!  I'm very proud of you!

Happy Birthday, Mr Tekatch!

Mr. Tekatch's birthday was April 19th. Most of the school gathered in his classroom to sing happy birthday to our principal. We surprised him with balloons, coffee, and a "Timmies" gift Card!

Happy Birthday, Mr. Tekatch!!

Kandinsky Circles

This term we studied a little about the Russian born painter Wassily Kadinsky.  He is a more modern artist and is known for his "abstract" paintings which were supposedly the first of their kind.  Many of his pictures involve concentric circles--a circle inside a circle, inside a circle,etc.--and they even seem to be a theme among much of his body of works.  After looking at several of his more famous works, we  emulated his theme by making some concentric circles of our own.  Each student made two circles--their size and choice of design to hang on our tree.  It makes for a very large as well as interesting collaborative project.  You can check it out in the stairwell beside the K-2 room.  Enjoy!

Tangrams

What you see here is called a Tangram--it is a large rectangle cut into 7 other shapes which can be changed and manipulated into other shapes or objects, like animals.
We dedicated one Friday morning math class to some critical thinking activities with tangram pieces.  Some people LOVED the puzzles....other people were super frustrated because the shapes did not seem to be cooperating!
We turned some of the puzzles into a competition to see who could figure out the shape first.  It was exciting and a little different. You can see below some of the groups working together to figure out the shapes.

We will have to do it again soon!

Happy Spring Break, Everyone!

Just Having A Little Fun!

It was a rainy day....Miss Weber was gone.....we had the idea.....

Post-it notes and a little extra time with our class = trouble and a LOT OF FUN!  We spent our recess covering every possible surface in Miss Weber's room with 3,800 post-it notes.  You can see below that the teacher's desk was extra fun!

We tried to deny it afterwards and blame it on Ezekiel the skeleton in her room.....but there was photo evidence of everyone enjoying themselves! Even Mr. Tekatch!!

In reality, a couple of gigglers got us "busted" by Mr. Tekatch....but he decided to leave us alone.  Maybe he was afraid his office would be next!

Doesn't he LOOK guilty?!?
It turns out Miss Weber was running low on Post-its and was happy with our gift!
Good times at BCA!

Moral of the story: Do not go on field trips on rainy days?

911 Assembly

A few weeks ago we had some special visitors and old friends at our school.  Miss Dooley, Auntie Flo, and just plain Flo--it was good to see her and her classmates as they came to do a presentation on their new field of expertise.  Flo is studying to be a 911 operator and she came today to share with our students when to call 911 and what to say and do in an emergency.  Everyone enjoyed the assembly (all the stories and situations that got told) and the goody bags we got at the end.  Thanks, Miss D!!

Zack is so enjoyable to have in class.  He is cheerful, attentive, and hard working.  He tries very hard at everything he does and does everything with a good attitude.  Zack is a fun person to be around and loves learning new things.  I am so glad he is in my class, and I wanted to reward his steadiness, helpfulness, and positive contributions.  Thanks, Zack and Keep up the good work!

Congratulation, Zackary! You should be very proud!

BCA Biography Fair

Well, we made it!! We finally finished out Socials Fair projects....and what a WONDERFUL job our class did. I wanted to post a picture of as many of our class projects as possible, because I was so proud of our students. They did a great job, learned so much, and should be very proud of themselves.

Bethany won the award for Best in Character as she did such a good job BEING Einstein!

Silas was a first prize winner and competed for Best of Show as George Washington.

Ella won a second place ribbon as Malala.

Here we have another first place winner--Anais as Lottie Moon, Chinese missionary.

Is that Jonah or the "real" Steve Irwin? Such a convincing accent!  Jonah won not only a second place prize but also the award for best accent!

Talk about famous characters from history!! The award's ceremony in the evening was such a treat as we got to hear from several of our students about their projects.  Again, I am so proud of our students and all the hard work that went into their projects!

Also a special thanks to our judges that gave their day to come and judge the projects!
