During our read aloud times, sometimes the students like something to keep their hands busy while I read aloud to them. Yesterday, we had our first doodle challenge. Our sage judges picked the following three favourites.

Fur Trade Guest

Our class was so lucky today! What a great day! Not only was it hot lunch day and casual day and Miss Leonard's "unbirthday". BUT we also had amazing guest speaker!

Miss Roy came to our class this afternoon as a fur trader's wife. She talked to us about everything to do with the fur trade--from Fort St. James to copper kettles.

We now know all about trapping, hunting, ink pens, china, embroidery, and trade beads.

She told us about tanning hides and wearing corsets.

Thank you sooo much Miss Roy for sharing your knowledge and interests with us!

October 18, 2013
This week we finished the book I Am David.  After we finished it, we watched the movie.  While we watched, we ate some snacks like popcorn, salt and vinegar chips, jelly beans, tortilla chips...etc.

During the movie, the door opened.  Somebody with her husband came in.  This person who walked in is awesome, wonderful, great, terrific, and marvelous, plus brilliant.  Her name is MRS. Leonard--Miss Leonard's mom.  If you haven't met her, yet.  You should!

Pretend you found a Magical Four-Leaf Clover....

This week our spelling homework said....
" Pretend you found a Magical Four-Leaf Clover.  Write a narrative piece about where you found it, who was with you, and what you wished for and why."

Check out this story by a creative student:

One day I was laying in the grass thinking.  Then, all of the sudden I found this four leaf clover. I picked it. Within half a second, a leprechaun came up from behind a rock and said, "I grant you four wishes. What do you desire?" I thought for a moment about what wishes would really make my life better. Finally I decided. That my first wish  would be: There would be no more stealing in the world. My second would be no more sickness from now on. My third wish was for no abuse of any kind, (not even simple school yard bullying). My final wish would be no lying of any sort. I imagine  this would make the worked a better place. The little green man agreed with me, but alas, he could not carry out my wishes.  He told me only God can do that. So later, I ended up with 1000,000 dollars and a sports car and all sorts of other stuff. : )  But, Hey I tried. --Joey Aho

Name Towers!

We have been working on our "Name Towers" for two art blocks. They look so cool! Still a work in progress, but next time we will be able to mount them on black paper for a great 3-D effect.

This project teaches dimension, 2-D letters, patterns, color combos etc.

We had a really good time working on these together! They look great, everyone!

Ye are the Salt of the Earth!

Matthew 5:1-16 was our term 1 memory verse. Some of the class was ready early, but most of them did their recitation today! 16 verses is a lot! Good job, class!

As a special treat Brother Richard came in to show us an object lesson on what it means to be the "salt of the earth". With an electrical circuit we talked about keeping our circuit connected to God (so our light doesn't go out). We also learned about resistors and how we let things in our life keep God from speaking to us. Lastly, Brother Richard talked about what it means to be salty. He used salt water to complete the circuit and the light lit up!
Putting in the salt!
Sooooo Cool! We want to be salty Christians and shine the light of the Lord!

I Am David

Today we finished our first class novel study--I Am David. This book is about a young boy whose only memories are those of the concentration camp where he has been since age three. "The Man" whom David learns has kept him alive because he use to be a friend of David's mother is being transferred. Before the transfer, he helps David escape telling him to go to Denmark. David embarks on his long journey and learns of the beauties of life as well as the different natures of man. What happens to David? What is in Denmark? You will have to ask a grade 5/6 student to find out!

French Pizza (Student Blogger--Bethany)

This week we are making pizza for French! We are making a French recipe.  My pizza would be all cheese with bacon slices! My pizza would be the best.  Yummy for me!! French is one of my favorite subjects.
--Bethany

We have the privilege of working with Mrs. Dehkurdi in French for the next couple weeks.  The students will be doing a pizza unit and learning all sorts of French vocabulary that goes with it.  At the end of the unit, they are very excited that they get to make their pizza.  It's sure to be fun! Thanks to Mrs. Dehkurdi for being a great teacher!

Secret Agents--Math Division

Welcome to the MBI, a secret multiplication organization.  Our agents consist of Agent 36 (Joseph), Agent 12 (Emily), Agent 21 (Sharon), Agent 35 (Joey), Agent 56 (Zackary), and many others.  Our mission: learn our 6x and 7x tables.  Our enemy is the Brain Sucking Division Blobs, with a goal to make us dumber. The only problem is some agents forget to use other people's agent names.  Then they have to do more training!!
 --Student blogger Agent 54

Today in an effort to help concrete the multiplication tables. The students were given a problem. For example, the student with 7x6 became "Agent 42". They were not allowed to use their "real" names today, only their "Agent" names.  Hopefully we can complete our mission before the mad minute test on Friday!
